چکیده

Kim, Sun-Hoi. 2002. The metrical dependency of tone placement in Optimality Theory. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 8.1. 17-38. In this paper, I examine the metrical dependency of tone placement in OT. In Creek and Shingazidja, the determination of tone placement heavily draws on the special relationship between high tone and the metrically prominent position in the prosodic domain. In Shingazidja the metrically prominent position in the metrical phrase is tonally marked by high tone whereas the metrically prominent position in the prosodic word is tonally marked by high tone in Creek. In determining the metrically prominent position, the prosody of intonational phrase is metrically computed in Shingazidja whereas the prosody of prosodic word is metrically computed in Creek. In the metrical phrase in Shingazidja, the metrically prominent position is occupied by the rightmost vowel of the leftmost foot whereas the metrically prominent position is occupied by the rightmost vowel of the rightmost foot in the prosodic word in Creek. The ranking relationship of conflicting constraints formalizes the factors affecting the placement of high tone and the construction of metrical structure, and the parametric difference in the ranking relationship differentiates Shingazidja tonology from Creek tonology. Harmony and Metrical Structure in Palestinian Arabic

Examples of non-local phonological processes that are bound by prosodic domains are expected in the world’s phonologies. In other words, we should anticipate cases where the metrical foot constrains vowel harmony. Intuitively, it seems like a natural interaction. However, the notion of vowel harmony bound by the metrical foot has only been sparsely proposed in the literature (Abu-Salim 1987, Hu...

Neutralization of T 3 and T 5 Sandhi in Suzhou Chinese

This paper examines the two sandhi patterns of disyllabic compound whose initial tone is either a high falling tone (T3) or a dipping tone (T5) in Suzhou in the framework of Optimality Theory. The idea of different levels of tone melody in (Shih, 1986) is adopted in this paper. Namely, the syllable level tone melody changes to word level which lead to the neutralization of T3 and T5 sandhi. Lef...

The Stress Window in Pirah~a: A Reanalysis of Rhythm in Optimality Theory

In this paper we provide an analysis of the location of main stress in Pirah~a, from the perspective of Optimality Theory (OT) (Prince and Smolensky 1993, McCarthy and Prince 1993a,b). The three-syllable window for possible stress placement, coupled with quantity-sensitivity and default nality have to our knowledge de ed convincing explanation within current phonological theory. We will show th...

Optimality Theoretic Representation of Stress in Cairene Arabic

Stress pattern of Cairene Arabic (CA) has played a major role in the development of stress placement theory. Syllable weight plays a role, however, the weight to stress principle does not always apply. Bimoracity of a foot is very important and is largely addressed in the literature. Stress in CA is described in the literature as Moraic Trochee, but primary stress is on one of the three leftmos...
